And we know those supplies must last throughout the school year to stay on track with the curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nea.org\/nea-today\/all-news-articles\/out-pocket-spending-school-supplies-adds-strain-educators#:~:text=Well%20over%2090%20percent%20of,the%20course%20of%20the%20year.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Education Association<\/a> released an article speaking to the depths teachers go to stock their classrooms and the possible effect it can have on their retention and recruitment:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.beyondfinance.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Teachers-on-a-budget-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Teachers take care of their kids, even if it means spending their money to do it.\" class=\"wp-image-4235\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:350px;height:250px\" width=\"350\" height=\"250\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Over 90 percent of teachers spend money on school supplies and other items their students need to succeed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just before the pandemic, educators, on average, spent around $500 of their own money on classroom supplies for the year. That number is expected to be considerably higher this year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under-resourced schools and the unstated expectation that educators will use personal resources on supplies and equipment drive educators away from the profession.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondfinance.com\/program\">Beyond Finance<\/a> understands that teachers spend nearly as much as parents when the school year rolls around. Be sure to speak with your tax advisor to see if any of your purchases fall within the guidelines stated by the IRS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/taxtopics\/tc458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IRS<\/a>, &#8220;If you&#8217;re an eligible educator, you can deduct up to $300 of unreimbursed trade or business expenses. Qualified expenses are amounts you paid or incurred for participation in professional development courses, books, supplies, computer equipment (including related software and services), other equipment, and supplementary materials you use in the classroom.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Teacher Appreciation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To help stretch your budget, specific retailers have created discounts just for teachers that are available year-round. Take advantage of those and other sites offering free teacher resources and curricula like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weareteachers.com\/category\/free-printables-for-teachers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">We Are Teachers<\/a>. Don&#8217;t just include the classroom parents. Share your list or registries on social media as well. You would be shocked at how much friends and even strangers will help build your classroom inventory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try posting it a month before school starts or when the stores on your lists have sales. Using a site like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myregistry.com\/signup\/onboard_v2\/SignupStart.aspx?param=signup&amp;regType=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MyRegistry<\/a> is a great resource because it will show multiple stores that carry the item you may be looking for and help people compare prices and availability. Going into debt or spending over your budget isn&#8217;t necessary.
