This month we celebrate them in honor of <strong>National Pet Day, and what better way to celebrate than to talk about finances, pet ownership, and how we can help pets live their best lives?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/money\/blueprint\/pet-insurance\/cost-of-pet-ownership\/\"><em>USA Today<\/em> article<\/a> revealed the lengths pet owners go to make sure their pets are taken care of and treated well:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>91%<\/strong> experienced some financial stress in the past year related to the cost of pet care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>66% <\/strong>have cut back on personal spending due to the economy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>65%<\/strong> needed to ask friends or family for money for a pet-related bill<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>33%<\/strong> took a second job or looked for new income opportunities to afford pet care<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Adopting or rescuing any animal (species or breed) is a huge undertaking, especially for a first-time pet owner. Imagine being in debt and still trying to maintain your pet&#8217;s health. Veterinary bills and store supplies can be costly. I regularly inspect Harvey for new lumps and bumps,\u201d says Abby. \u201cMost recently, I discovered a new lump and my gut said it needed further examination by a professional. Unfortunately, the lump was cancer, and because I was performing his exams regularly, I caught it early. They were able to surgically remove the tumor without the cancer spreading.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to Abby\u2019s actions and great vets Harvey is expected to make a full recovery. She also saved herself more costly bills related to his cancer by catching it early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Dr. Graham Breyshaw, Chief Veterinarian of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalhumanesociety.org\/resource\/why-routine-preventative-care-your-pet-essential#:~:text=In%20most%20cases%2C%20preventative%20care,Humane%20Society's%20Chief%20Veterinarian%2C%20Dr.\">Animal Humane Society, <\/a>says, \u201cJust because [pet care] is routine doesn\u2019t mean it is not essential.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>By taking your pet for routine checkups, you can work out payments or start with less costly treatments before spending a full, substantial amount all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pet Insurance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Abby also credits pet insurance as a huge help with the costs associated with Harvey\u2019s story. While it can be tempting to avoid the monthly investment, consider your pet&#8217;s age, environment and species when making this decision. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some pets are prone to needing more frequent vet visits than others, with increased age-related pain, weather allergies and dietary needs. Those could mean more unexpected monthly expenses. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaa.com\/campaign\/insurance\/pet?vurl=vurl_paws&amp;&amp;ds_s=CPC&amp;ds_e=GOOGLE&amp;ds_ag=Pet&amp;ds_k=usaa%20pet%20insurance&amp;txid=SEM:TX1:U4TO2M989C&amp;ds_rl=1249521&amp;ds_rl=1249527&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjw8diwBhAbEiwA7i_sJa2GMfOCgtZY6E4gh3UCF6k5orW5Jk4PPZbBBcODsNGBAJMUjnio4BoCEDsQAvD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\">USAA<\/a> has introduced a new option to bundle your pet into your monthly bill. This could work exceptionally well, especially if you want to deal with one company for most of your insurance needs (and may save some money in the process).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make a Separate Budget<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Until you have had your pet a bit, it can be hard to estimate how much you will spend monthly.
