We spoke with Jamie \u2014 dog mom, Patriots fan, and bookworm \u2014 to learn about her journey through debt and what life looks like since graduating from her Beyond Finance program.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Can you tell us a bit about yourself?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    I\u2019m from Massachusetts and I work in the mortgage business. I actually start a new position next week! My parents, one of my in-laws, and one of my aunts live with me. I help take care of them, and they pay some rent. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I have a 15-year-old Shih Tzu named Herky. And I have season tickets to the New England Patriots!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How did you find yourself in debt?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    I bought a house probably a year, year and a half, before I entered the program. It\u2019s just way more expensive than they tell you. Even knowing the industry, I wish I had taken a homeowner education class for the budgeting aspect.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I\u2019d be like, \u201cOh, I need to buy a table or a TV,\u201d and I\u2019d put it on my credit card. It just really escalated. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    I got to the point where I was putting every penny of my paycheck into debt. I really didn\u2019t have any money left over.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    I\u2019ve always kind of been a bad online shopper too. It didn\u2019t take long to get into a lot of debt. I just knew I needed help. There was no way I was getting out from under it.<\/em> I got to the point where I was putting every penny of my paycheck into debt. I really didn\u2019t have any money left over. I just said, \u201cOkay, something\u2019s wrong. I have to fix this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Why did you choose Beyond Finance?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    I had actually signed up with another company first. I signed the papers \u2014 and I just didn\u2019t like it. I got a really bad gut feeling. I told them I found another way to do it. I googled companies and Beyond had a good rating.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The call with Beyond wasn\u2019t a sales pitch. It felt like they wanted to help me and understood what I was going through. They told me I wasn\u2019t alone. I remember getting off the phone and thinking, \u201cOkay, I at least made that first step.\u201d That first step was really important.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    What\u2019s happened since graduating?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Graduating was amazing. It was the ultimate relief to say, \u201cI\u2019m done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Now, I have about $5,000 in an emergency fund that I didn\u2019t have before. I probably had less than $500 in my bank account when I started this whole process. That\u2019s huge. As a homeowner, you just never know what\u2019s going to come up.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I was able to refinance my auto loan after graduation too, and I wouldn\u2019t have qualified for that if I hadn\u2019t gotten rid of all the debt.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Next year I turn 40. A few friend groups want to do 40th birthday trips \u2014 and if I hadn\u2019t gone through Beyond, there\u2019s no way I could afford to go. But I have that money in a bank account now.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We haven\u2019t booked it yet, but we\u2019re talking about a cruise \u2014 like Boston to Bermuda. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    I\u2019m way more responsible than I was before. I don\u2019t spend what I don\u2019t have, and I pay it off. I\u2019m not anti-credit, but I am anti-overspending.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I use a budgeting program called Monarch. It links to your bank account and shows where you spend your money. Even just putting it in a spreadsheet helps. You\u2019d be amazed how much money you\u2019d have left over if you track it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I think I\u2019m a success, I guess. <\/em>(laughs) I\u2019m proud of myself for figuring it out \u2014 and knowing this is never going to happen again. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
