Boundaries aren\u2019t about shutting people out; they\u2019re about protecting relationships from resentment and misunderstanding. They define what behaviors are acceptable to us.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Financial boundaries can be especially tough.<\/em><em> <\/em><em>Maybe you feel pressured to support someone financially, buy gifts, or split bills equally even if you order less. It\u2019s important to think about your values and decide what boundaries make you feel secure and respected. Without clear limits, hurt and frustration can build.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ask yourself:&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Are there relationships where I need clearer boundaries?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Are there situations causing resentment?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Is there something I haven\u2019t expressed yet?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Reflecting on these can help you identify boundaries that protect your relationships \u2014 whether they\u2019re about money or something else.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>When it comes to setting those boundaries, here\u2019s a 4-step approach that can help:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><br><strong>1. Reinforce the relationship\u2019s value.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Express what the person means to you. For example, \u201cI love you and value our relationship. I want to make sure we stay close.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>2. Be VERY clear about what you want.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Focus on specific actions. For example, instead of saying, \u201cI don\u2019t want to feel judged,\u201d say, \u201cI\u2019d like you to stop commenting on my financial choices.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>3. Highlight the positive outcomes<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For example, \u201cThis will help me feel like I can talk to you about anything.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>4. Share what will happen if the boundary isn\u2019t followed.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For instance, \u201cIf you continue to make these comments, I won\u2019t visit as often.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Remember, it\u2019s not selfish to protect yourself. You can\u2019t control how someone reacts to a boundary, but their reaction doesn\u2019t diminish the boundary\u2019s importance.
