We interviewed Steve \u2014 registered nurse, family man, Dallas Cowboys fan, and gamer \u2014 to learn how a \u201cswiping\u201d mentality can put even high-earners in debt, and how he turned everything around with his Beyond Finance program.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Can you tell us a bit about yourself?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    I\u2019m a registered nurse in Maryland. I\u2019ve been doing it for 24 years now. We get people coming in with heart attacks, and you get instant gratification when you\u2019re like, \u201cOh man, I just saved a life today!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    My wife and I have a blended family \u2014 six kids together. She has four, I have two and they all get along. My wife is my best friend, so whenever I\u2019m not working, I\u2019m always hanging with her!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We are living life to the fullest. Date nights. Family vacations. We travel a lot. And we\u2019re still able to save money and be frugal.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    How did you find yourself in debt?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    My marriage with my wife is my second marriage. Getting remarried \u2014 I had some money stashed and I was able to pay for that. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then we ended up buying a house and all of a sudden you start swiping credit cards.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    You try to work, work, work, but the bills don\u2019t catch up so fast, and sometimes they come quicker than expected. You\u2019re like, \u201cWait a minute, I need to stop swiping \u2014 the interest rates are killing me. As much money as I\u2019m putting on there, it\u2019s still not making anything up.\u201d It was an eye-opener. I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d racked up all of that debt.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A lot of people assume high earners don\u2019t struggle with debt. What was your experience?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    I\u2019m one of those \u2014 I make six figures. Between me and my wife, we make really good money. And you\u2019re paying these bills, paying these bills, and you\u2019re like, \u201cWhy can\u2019t we catch up? What in the world?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Same as anyone else, you\u2019re doing the credit card swiping and you\u2019re like, \u201cOh, I can pay it,\u201d but then the car breaks down or you have to do something with the house. And then you\u2019re snowballing.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    What was your experience like with Beyond Finance?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    I think I heard an ad on the radio. The representative I talked to was so sincere. \u201cWe can help you every step of the way\u2026 don\u2019t feel embarrassed. A lot of people in America find themselves in the same hole and they don\u2019t know how to get out, but we\u2019re here to help.\u201d I was hesitant \u2014 we probably had three or four calls \u2014 then I said, \u201cAlright, let\u2019s just go ahead and do this.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The lower payments gave me breathing room. I was able to do a little more stuff and see more money getting saved in the bank.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And I\u2019m a tech person so I liked seeing my progress on the app: which bill they\u2019re working on, how much debt is being paid off.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It felt good to see that first account get paid off! \u201cOkay, I don\u2019t owe this credit card.\u201d Cut it up. That makes you feel even better.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    What was graduation like and what\u2019s happened since?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    It felt really good.\u00a0 I just wish I had the graduation theme song playing! You pay that last bill off and now you\u2019re like, \u201cWe have some extra money to spare now!\u201d The money you were making toward your debts \u2014 that\u2019s back in your pocket. You can actually see the savings you\u2019re building.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We are living life to the fullest. Date nights. Family vacations. We travel a lot. And we\u2019re still able to save money and be frugal. We\u2019ve been to Colombia, Cuba, Jamaica, and Punta Cana. Even during the program, we were able to go to Italy.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    These days I\u2019m living off what\u2019s in the bank: gas on my debit card, grocery shopping, maybe that\u2019s all I can do this week. Next week, if we both got paid, \u201cOh, we could go out to dinner today.\u201d I\u2019m learning to spend what I have instead of \u201cfuture\u201d \u2014 because that\u2019s what credit cards are: \u201cfuture,\u201d because you still have to pay it back.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Now, I\u2019m trying to get my wife to join Beyond Finance for her debt. Now that I’m finished, she\u2019s thinking about it.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
