Every business and every individual is urged to  use vigilance in surfing the web. The FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/research\/elder-fraud-financial-abuse-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studied financial scams<\/a> targeting the elderly from 2019 to 2021, and the numbers are startling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reports of losses <strong>more than doubled<\/strong> over that time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There were <strong>over 265,000 cases<\/strong> of lost funds through scams<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Estimated losses of those cases <strong>surpass $1.7 billion<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One of our recent graduates, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondfinance.com\/newsroom\/beyond-debt-now-gives-client-56000-gift-for-the-holidays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Linda Buerkley<\/a><\/strong>, was one of those victims of online scams. She decided to use her story to help others avoid the same fate. Working closely with the Beyond Finance team, our Beyond Debt Now giveaway recipient wrote an editorial entitled &#8220;<strong>Seniors, Don&#8217;t Learn About Financial Scams the Hard Way Like Me<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridadaily.com\/linda-buerkley-seniors-dont-learn-about-financial-scams-the-hard-way-like-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that post<\/a> is in <em><strong>Florida Daily<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Say You? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Buerkley, 80, is a mother of two and a grandmother of six. Although she&#8217;s always tried to be careful, cyber criminals can be very skilled. Financial scams target everyone, but the elderly community is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.fbi.gov\/archives\/news\/testimony\/fraud-against-the-elderly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">93% less likely<\/a><\/strong> to file fraud reports because they &#8220;either don&#8217;t know who to report&#8221; or are &#8220;too ashamed they have been scammed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Linda was one of the victims of this type of scam, but she didn&#8217;t let embarrassment keep her from educating others. In her editorial, Linda shares her experiences and warns other Americans her age not to fall victim to these tricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Plenty of bad actors are preying on the elderly community. We must take steps to safeguard ourselves and our money. The best thing you can do is find a circle of people you can truly trust. Call upon friends or family when something seems suspicious or even wrong.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Linda also shared how she got out of debt, attributing much of her newfound confidence to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondfinance.com\/newsroom\/dr-erika-rasure-featured-on-national-media-for-stress-awareness-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Erika Rasure<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondfinance.com\/newsroom\/beyond-finance-client-counselor-nathan-astle-opens-financial-therapy-clinical-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nate Astle<\/a><\/strong>, Beyond Finance&#8217;s financial therapists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>At first, I was afraid to tell anyone my story, but through the group sessions led by two financial therapists, Dr. Erika Rasure and Nathan Astle. I learned that I was not alone in my anxiety and stress. The sessions helped me regain my confidence. And there was healing in sharing.
