Among the statistics on economic matters in a marriage, the survey showed that only <strong>43% of U.S. couples don\u2019t have to \u201cwork to resist\u201d blaming each other<\/strong> for what\u2019s wrong with their bank account and cash flow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Other findings in the national survey include these numbers for married couples:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>28% <\/strong>don\u2019t believe communication basics help them through economic struggles&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>60% <\/strong>of married couples can agree on a budget and stick to it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>48%<\/strong> aren\u2019t \u201chappy\u201d or \u201csatisfied\u201d with one bank account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>43%<\/strong> of marriages \u201ccan handle it\u201d when they disagree on financial decisions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>28%<\/strong> of those couples \u201crarely agree\u201d on significant expenses (e.g., car, home)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond Finance partnered with nationally regarded psychoanalyst <a href=\"https:\/\/psyml.co\/dr-galen-buckwalter\/\"><strong>Dr. Galen Buckwalter<\/strong><\/a>, founder of psyML, to commission the survey and interpret the findings. His notes reflect discoveries from married couples, both with and without financial challenges. The personal financial services company began working with Buckwalter due to his pioneering research on \u201cAcute financial stress.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDebt and income are not as important to marital satisfaction as how the couple deals with finances,\u201d said Dr. Buckwalter, who also developed the eHarmony.com proprietary matching system. \u201cSome people who don\u2019t experience the stressors of debt still experience marital strife if they can\u2019t properly communicate about their finances. It\u2019s vital to understand where they stand together on economic issues.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Buckwalter believes the five areas couples can work to de-stress their marriages with financial woes are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Understanding <strong>what\u2019s to blame for financial stress<\/strong> instead of whom is key<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pooling resources <\/strong>can help unite a marriage and expenses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Being open about earnings and savings <\/strong>could strike a balance in a marriage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Realizing each other\u2019s <strong>emotional and financial styles of communication<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Agreeing on crucial financial purchases <\/strong>can create peace in the home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another team member at Beyond Finance is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondfinance.com\/newsroom\/forbes-speaks-to-beyond-finance-expert-about-financial-therapy\/\"><strong>Nathan Astle<\/strong><\/a>, a certified financial therapist and founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.financialtherapyclinicalinstitute.com\/\">Financial Therapy Clinical Institute<\/a>.
