A new national survey from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondfinance.com\/about\/\">Beyond Finance<\/a>, one of the first of its kind, reveals a troubling trend \u2014 financial distress is fueling a silent mental health crisis among men, driven by secrecy, shame, and isolation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Men\u2019s financial stress and mental health are deeply intertwined&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey of 2,000 U.S. men found a powerful link between financial strain and emotional well-being<strong>.<\/strong> Only 27% of men rated their mental health as \u2018Excellent,\u2019 and even fewer \u2014 just 15% \u2014 felt the same&nbsp; about their financial health. Over 25% rated their finances as \u2018Poor\u2019 or \u2018Not Very Good,\u2019&nbsp; while 10% gave the same rating to their mental health. This parallel between financial hardship and emotional distress suggests that for many men, money isn\u2019t just a numbers issue. It\u2019s a mental health issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than half of respondents (57%) said they are currently in debt with credit card debt (62%), mortgages (34%), and auto loans (30%) cited as the most common types. The emotional impact of debt is clear: men reported feeling frustrated (38%), anxious (29%), overwhelmed (28%), and embarrassed (19%) because of their financial situation \u2014 yet nearly a quarter (22%) don\u2019t feel comfortable seeking out financial advice from anyone.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis survey confirms what we\u2019ve long known \u2014 men are suffering in silence when it comes to money,\u201d said Lou Antonelli, chief operating officer of Beyond Finance. \u201cFinancial anxiety is isolating, and many men don\u2019t feel safe opening up. At Beyond Finance, we\u2019re encouraging men to stop gambling with their well-being and start building both financial and emotional resilience. That\u2019s why we support men every day through weekly sessions with certified financial therapists who help them navigate not just debt, but the emotional weight behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other key findings from the survey:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Financial infidelity is common and often driven by shame<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Half of men admitted to keeping financial secrets from a spouse or partner. Among those in committed relationships, the most common money secrets included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A savings account (14%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spending habits (13%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A credit card or line of credit (12%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cash reserves (12%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An amount of debt (10%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investment(s) (9%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The top reasons for hiding these behaviors were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Having different views and values when it comes to finance (31%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling embarrassed (28%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeling ashamed (26%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The mental health cost of the online sports betting boom<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The rise of online sports betting is making matters worse.&nbsp; The survey found that nearly 1 in 5 men (19%) have placed a sports bet online in the past year. Of those, nearly three-quarters (74%) have placed an online sports bet in the last week, and 23% said they\u2019ve gambled online in the last 24 hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the findings, 4 in 10 sports betters (40%) believe they\u2019re likely to win a large amount of money, yet only 16% said their financial wellness has improved because of it. More than 1 in 10 of those in relationships (13%) admitted they\u2019ve kept their sports betting activities a secret from their partner, and a third (33%) said they don\u2019t tell their partner how much they win or lose.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A call for empathy and action<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey revealed that when seeking help, 41% of men feel comfortable confiding in their partners, while only 25% would actually seek their partner\u2019s financial advice. Only 19% would confide in friends and 16% seek their financial counsel, while over 20% would prefer to go it alone. Surprisingly, nearly 40% of respondents feel that their financial situation has made them feel disconnected from friends, and 37% said they avoid friendships that make them feel financially insecure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cBeyond Finance\u2019s research findings point to a broader cultural issue: Men are emotionally overwhelmed by money, yet afraid to seek help. Shame, secrecy, and silence are driving real harm, not only to personal finances, but to relationships, careers, and mental health,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondfinance.com\/blog\/author\/nastle\/\">Nathan Astle<\/a>, a Certified Financial Therapist at Beyond Finance.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help change this, Astle offered up&nbsp; the following tips:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First,<strong> Talk to someone.<\/strong> A friend, a partner, or a professional. Bottling it up doesn\u2019t help\u2014but opening up does.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Next,<strong> Make a budget or plan that works for you.<\/strong> Studies show that having a clear plan for your finances can significantly reduce stress and anxiety. It\u2019s not about restriction\u2014it\u2019s about control.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Third, <strong>&nbsp;Set small goals.<\/strong> Even saving a few dollars can boost your confidence and motivation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally, <strong>&nbsp;Remember: you\u2019re not your paycheck. <\/strong>Money struggles do <em>not<\/em> define you. You are not your paycheck.
