How Debt Consolidation Changes Everyday Finances for the Better

Enrolling in a debt consolidation program means more than just saving on monthly payments and working towards freedom from debt. It’s also a way for people to reexamine their financial habits, and start building better ones.

In this article, we’ll look at how working through a debt consolidation program can inspire positive changes — and hear how a real client was able to see her finances in a new light.

A Second Chance at Good Finance

Dealing with debt is confusing and stressful.

Our client, Sharise, knows the feeling of overwhelming debt all too well: “I was barely making the minimum payments, and I knew we were just one financial crisis away from being in a really bad situation. It would literally feel like the walls were closing in,” she told us.

But talking to a Beyond Finance specialist gave her the opportunity to understand that her feelings of panic were impacting her ability to take action on her debt.

“She was very patient and really went over the process in detail,” Sharise said. “Things started to become better, and I could feel this stress lifting when there was a plan in place. I just felt so good knowing that I wasn’t in this alone.”

The Power of a Program

By bringing everything into one simple payment, debt consolidation clarifies your financial picture, making it easier to see what’s happening with your money each month.

“It really helped me to shift my thinking and my behaviors and my relationship with money, and how I spend money,” Sharise said.

And knowing that you’re actively paying off your debt can inspire a major shift in mindset, too. Sharise used our program as a launchpad for building a financial practice that could last far after she graduated from Beyond.

“Really being on that cash diet — to know it’s been a year since I used a credit card, and we’re able to enjoy life and pay bills on time, and actually afford my lifestyle without overextending myself,” she said.

The sense of regained control is a major debt consolidation benefit — and often, that’s exactly what’s needed to start noticing the money habits that may have contributed to their debt in the first place.

Thinking Deeper About Debt

Making a major behavioral change can be incredibly difficult. But enrolling in our program can inspire our clients to start learning more about themselves and their finances, and spur that positive change.

“One of the most important lessons I’ve learned from working with Beyond Finance and following their process (and from reading some books on it) is that getting out of debt is a priority,” Sharise said.

“It is really hard to move forward with anything. It affects all aspects of your life: mentally, emotionally, spiritually, financially. You can’t save money when you’re in debt because it sucks from everything that you’re trying to do.”

Sharise now has the good habits and greater understanding of herself — and no debt to hold her down. After graduating a little over a year after starting her program, she knows that going with Beyond was the right decision for her finances and her future.

“I’d say to anyone else struggling with this: You owe it to yourself and your family to really work on getting rid of your debt, and it is literally like a huge weight being lifted off your shoulders once you know that you are actively working towards that,” she said.
