Client Exclusive: How We Helped Josh K. Recover From Debt After a Cancer Diagnosis

Meet Josh K.: Proud Dad, Sports Fan and Cancer Fighter

Josh K. is a Texas-based insurance agent, husband, and proud father of three daughters. He loves football, collects sports cards, and cherishes traveling with his family every summer. But lurking behind his love for life was a heavy financial burden — one that began during one of the most difficult periods of his life.

How A Cancer Diagnosis Sparked a Financial Crisis

In 2016, Josh was diagnosed with cancer. He wasn’t working at the time and had no health benefits, leaving his young family to navigate not just a medical crisis but a financial one too.

Even after he recovered and returned to work, the financial damage lingered. “Once I was cleared to go to work, I found a job and have never missed a payment,” Josh said. “But at that point, the damage had been done.” Over the next seven years, Josh navigated several layoffs, which forced him to rely on credit cards to get by.

“My debt started in 2016 when I was diagnosed with cancer. I was not working at the time so we had no benefits. Our oldest daughter was 10 months old, so I was a stay-at-home dad at that time. I used my credit cards for medical bills and opened new ones when I had to.”

The Weight of Making Minimum Payments

Altogether, Josh had 26 credit cards and could only afford to make minimum payments. Even that amount was overwhelming for his budget. The whole situation made him feel like he was drowning.

He recalled a low point when he went to buy groceries and realized he didn’t have enough leftover after making his minimum payments.

Ultimately, he had to ask his mom for help so he could feed his family.

“Every day I would get off work and immediately start thinking about my debt. Every paycheck I got was 70% gone as soon as I got paid. There was a week when I could not get a full amount of groceries after making all minimum payments. I had to borrow money from my mom. As a husband and a father, that was humiliating and heartbreaking. That led me to find a solution for my debt that was not bankruptcy.”

Finding Hope With Beyond Finance

Determined to avoid bankruptcy, Josh began searching online for a better solution. That’s when he discovered Beyond Finance. “I researched and read all about them and all the reviews I could find,” he shared. What stood out most was the empathy.

“[My representative] was amazing. She made me feel right at home. No judgments… she just calmly listened to my story and said ‘this is how we’re going to get you taken care of.’

In just his first month with Beyond Finance, Josh is already thrilled with his progress. His monthly payments dropped from $1,353.94 to $498 — a savings of more than $850 a month.

He is also happy with the flexibility of the program. He’s been able to adjust his payment dates to better suit his circumstances.

“Customer service has been excellent. They easily adjusted my payment dates when I needed it.”

Advice for Others: “Don’t Suffer in Silence”

Josh knows how isolating debt can feel so he urges others to take the first step and share their debt situation with a professional.

“Don’t suffer in silence. Give them a call, tell them your situation. Just that first step will relieve so much of the stress that has been building up. Beyond has shown they absolutely know what they are doing.”

Looking Ahead: Debt-Free in Two Years

Josh’s program is scheduled for 47 months, but he’s aiming higher. “My goal is to have it done and be debt free in 24 months,” he said. A goal he hopes to achieve by making extra payments whenever he can. With his discipline, drive, and Beyond Finance in his corner, it’s a future well within reach.

*A quick note about Josh’s story: He’s a real client who was compensated for taking the time to share his experience with us. Josh saved 63% on his eligible monthly payments and his savings were calculated by subtracting his program payment from his self-reported payments or tradeline minimums on eligible accounts.
