Our resident financial wellness expert shares tips to make it through the holidays with your wallet’s health intact
December 17, 2024 (Chicago) – With the holidays just around the corner, consumers once again face the dilemma of what they can afford to spend on holiday gifts and celebration expenses. Adding to this year’s holiday shopping challenges is the impact of inflation.
Beyond Finance’s Dr. Erika Rasure spoke with GoBankingRates.com and AOL.com for a story on the “5 Costly Mistakes the Average Consumer Makes When Christmas Shopping.” The story emphasizes the need for consumers to be “vigilant, self-aware and well informed” and to be careful not to make mistakes that could hurt them financially.
Erika Rasure, Ph.D., chief financial wellness advisor and financial therapist at Beyond Finance, addressed the issue of spending on gifts out a sense of obligation. She highlighted the substantial difference between buying gifts because you want to (and can afford to) and buying gifts because you feel you need to (but can’t afford to).
“If you can’t afford it and can’t find joy in gift giving because it feels like a chore, you may want to reconsider how you approach your giving this year,” Rasure said. “For those of you with children, it’s an obligation that’s hard to get out of for many obvious reasons, but the most difficult one being the joy you know your kids get from holiday gifts.”
